White minaret The Sheikh Zayed grand mosque with its four white minarets is a breathtakingly beautiful building. It is huge in size and can accommodate more than 40.000 (that’s 40K!) worshippers. Each of the four white minarets is about 107 meters tall. Their roofs are covered with beaten gold, which makes them shine impressively in front of the blue desert sky. It somhow raises the feeling that it probably won't take long until it becomes a world heritage site.

The bright white color of the minarets originate from white dolomitic (Italian) marble which has been used for the external cladding of the mosque.

Location of the white minarets

The Sheikh Zayed grand mosque is located at the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and can easily be visited while staying in Dubai. Our recommendation is to take a guided day tour by bus, which also visits various other places of interest like Bazaars and museums of local history in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Especially the museums of local history are worth mentioning. They convey enlightening knowledge how the locals lived before the oil boom and how the Emirates developed afterwards. So definitely worth a visit!

Beside white minarets

Beside the four white minarets, there are some more noticeable (meaning Guinness book of world records worthy) things to marvel.

  • Like for example the 5,627 m2 sized carpet in the main prayer hall, which is considered to be the world's largest carpet.
  • Or the marble mosaic at the 17.000 m2 courtyard, which again is consider to be the largest of its kind in the world.
  • The seven colorful chandeliers made from Swarovski crystals (oh girls will love those, unfortunately they are just out of reach). The biggest chandelier is 10 meters in diameter and 15 meters tall and we’ve been told it once was the biggest chandelier in the world.
